SPAM

I deleted two spam/advertisement posts tonight and banned the users. If anyone happens to spot additional posts like this, please don't hesitate to contact me - I'd like to keep these boards free from crap like that.

I caught and banned one yesterday too, although I think it was harrassment rather than a genuine ad. (The user had gone to some trouble to fill out a lot of registration fields with a bunch of obscene fake contact information.)

I've now enabled account activation. New users will have to enter the code from an image and verify their account by replying to an e-mail.

Unfortunate, but necessary - thanks to the spammers.

I would like to require moderator approval for new members, as was suggested earlier. We should add a lot of people who have the authority to approve this.

I just looked over the user list, and I find that among our two hundred members, roughly half are spammer wannabes -- as evidenced by the fact that they have zero posts and their profiles contain porn web sites. I don't know how to change the settings myself.

Admin approval is now on. Again.

I also turned on avatars - for those folks who like to personalize their posting.

After deleting a few more spammers and investigating some options, I've decided on the next steps that need to be taken.

First, I'll be upgrading the phpBB to the latest version.
Second, I'll be setting up usergroups and permissions with appropriate access levels.

Requiring admin approval just to register is useless. Requesting group member permission to post on the forum seems to be the best solution.

I have no idea how quickly I'll get all of this done, but for those of you who have spotted the spam, I thought I'd let you know that we're taking steps to resolve it.

Have you considered doing this?
