Phone App

Postby rylan » Fri Apr 01, 2011 5:33 pm

Hi everyone,

I am not sure if anyone else has noticed that trying to view the wiki on a smart phone is a bit painful. I have been learning the new webOS 3.0 framework and wanted to learn jQuery, so I thought building an app for the wiki would be a fun project.

Here are some pictures mocked up using webOS 2.0 of what I have done so far, thoughts, comments, queries?

Unfortunately, I cannot currently share the source code as webOS 3.0 is currently under NDA (unless you are a webos dev that has signed the NDA, its a very simple process https://developer.palm.com/index.php). I can share the jQuery code that I use to scrap the site if anyone is interested.

I also noticed that newer versions of media wiki includes an api (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API) that removes the need to scrap and would make it easier to include more features. I would ask the admins to consider enabling this feature when they perform future updates to the wiki software.

Cheers

Update (clarification)

Just a little side note because it was not clear in my earlier post and I don't want HP Palm to get angry at me or think I violated the NDA; the images are mockups using webOS 2.0, to give the community a sense of what I was doing.

The NDA is now gone, however WebOS 3.0 is not avaliable on the phones yet.

However I have created a TouchPad app, more details can be found here http://www.ironchariots.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4200

Update & more phone apps

Postby rylan » Mon Nov 14, 2011 10:28 pm

Hello everyone,

I have made a phone version of the webOS version of the app available in the app catalog https://developer.palm.com/appredirect/?packageid=com.icottrell.ironchariots (currently only for the pre 3) as well as open sourced the code for that project http://rylan.github.com/Iron-Chariots--WebOS. It also works for the pixi, veer, pre, pre2 if you have the new maps application installed, but you have to build it from the source or send me a message and I will send the ipk to you.

I have now created a Windows Phone 7 version of the Iron Chariots app I made and is currently under the certification process. This may not make some people happy, but I have placed some advertising in this version to help cover the costs associated with building apps. So far I have been very lucky, from HP I was given free device and submitting apps to their catalog was free. As I still have student status, access to Microsoft tools and marketplace was also free. However, the current top 3, iPhone, Android, and RIM aren't so nice, so access to app stores and devices cost money. I know there are also cost associated with run this site from which the apps pull their data. So revenue from the app will go to supporting getting the app onto new platforms, supporting this site, and if there is excess revenue supporting my favourite secular charity http://responsiblecharity.org/. I will do my best to keep everyone up-to-date with how much revenue has been generated and where it went.

Here are some screen shots of the windows phone app

Hi all,

I would just like to update everyone on the phone / tablet project. I have done some reorganizing of the code base and it can all be found here now (http://rylan.github.com/Iron-Chariots). New bookmarking functionality has been added, as well as support for the Blackberry Playbook and Android (ICS tablet). I removed the ads from the windows phone version, that experiment only generated roughly 30 cents since its inclusion. Instead I am going to promote a charity I find dear Responsible Charity (http://www.responsiblecharity.org/) and will add that to the other devices, if anyone has charities they find dear, let me know and I will included them (secular charities only).

Over the next few months I will begin working on a HTML5 phone version (probably something similar to the wp7 version) to get it on more devices such as ios and android phones.

Cheers
