"America is a Christian nation"

Postby DallasHeathen » Wed May 02, 2007 9:49 pm

Not knowing too much about wiki editing, I'd like to point out an error. On the page America is a Christian Nation, the statement is made:
"In God We Trust" is not America's national motto. "E pluribus unum" is.

The phrase was added to currency in 1955 -- long after the country was founded.

Both these statements are false. "In God We Trust" is our national motto, since 1956. Before that, we had no official national motto. The Wikipedia page on it has a good reference.

Its history on currency is more complex (again, see the Wikipedia article), but it was first used on currency in 1861, and first appeared on paper currency in 1957.

I've modified it.

As far as E pluribus unum is concerned, it wasn't "the" official national motto but it was one of the first motto's officially adopted for government seals - which makes it "an" official motto, just not "the" official motto.

More at the wikipedia entry.
